The software mentioned in this post is still what I use today. XLD is a fantastic piece of software for ripping and xACT (which I believe has CD extraction as well) is a great software utility belt for modifying tags and converting between formats.

I still use Apple Lossless Encoding (ALE or ALAC). I’m also predominantly a Mac user though I am slowly making the migration back to Windows. FLAC is another good option as most Apple devices will now play them, especially if you’re using something like Audirvana (see my blog posts) for playback.

Note that if you have any high res files greater than 48KHz/24bits, your iPhones and iPads won’t play them natively without a separate DAC.

Rob, have you any more recent thoughts about cd ripping software on a Mac? The change from iTunes, which I never liked, to Music means I now need something to rip my collection. I’d also like a suggestion about which standard I should rip to. My wife and I have moved from a PC background to now a total Apple environment; iPhones, iPads and a Mac Mini. We aLso use Apple TV as our streaming system. Walter
