Here’s why. I assign a keyword to each scene or chapter within which a certain character appears. Then I can search on that keyword in my 100,000-word novel to see how many scenes or chapters in which that character appears. Or I assign a different keyword to all the scenes or chapters relevant to one storyline, and a different keyword to another. That helps me understand the balance and distribution across the storylines.  […]

I don’t know the answer to that off-hand, sorry!

Glad to hear it! Congrats on your first paperback. 🙂

Let me know if there’s anything I can do to improve the article.

Yes, it is confusing. I think by giving us a lot of flexibility with compile formatting, they’ve passed on a lot of complexity in the interface. I should take another pass through this when I do my next book and see if there are any shortcuts that would make the process easier. Thanks for the feedback!

Your post got me halfway through. There are still some things that confuse me, but that’s on me. (Also, L&L, if you’re reading, you’ve made some of this needlessly complex.)

Hi Lorena,

The structure is generally,
Chapter (folder)
– Scene (Text)

Sometimes a Chapter will have more than one scene and Scrivener does the thing where it inserts a Scene Separator between them on compile. So, generally more than one page per chapter.

Hope that helps a little. Feel free to ask questions if that’s not clearer.

Like, what does your book MS look like in Scrib — one chapter per page? Per folder? I can’t begin to follow until I know what I should be starting with! Thanks!
